The Downtown LA Proper by Kelly Wearstler Is Infused With Portuguese Inspirations

The Downtown LA Proper, designed by Kelly Wearstler, is a fusion of mood and exuberant energy in a historic California Renaissance Revival architecture. The 147-room monument is situated in its city"s multicultural heritage, with worldwide inspirations such as Mexican modernism with an infusion of French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Moroccan design features.

The inviting flagship Caldo Verde restaurant and bar embrace a tapestry of widely diversified and timeless features, with Mexican modernity and warm, earthy Portuguese and Spanish influences at its heart. The iconic doorway and grounding spirit of the room is a monumental stained-glass installation built by renowned local glassmaker Judson Studios, evoking the trompe l"oeil glass entryways of Mexico City"s Roma area.

Vintage hand-carved furniture and rugs, elegant vintage and bespoke tiles, rich woods, and the original architecture"s strong sculptural detailing make a mélange of fresh eclecticism with fanciful hand-fashioned unique designs, all created by local Los Angeles artists.

The DTLA Proper building"s history during its century gave a variety of areas with unusual proportions for developing ultra-residential guest rooms and suites.

The renowned 7th floor Pool Suite respects its intrinsic historic fabric while expressing a sense of other worldliness, with its pristine centerpiece the building"s original indoor 35-foot long swimming pool. In reflecting interaction with the crystalline water, a custom sweeping ivory ceramic mosaic wall of lyrical graphic expressions runs the length of the living room pool. (Yes, you read that right, a mix of pool and living room!)

The rooms combine handpicked custom furnishings with relevant art and handicrafts created exclusively by local artists to create transporting experiences.

In this redesigned grand suite with original painted court timber and double-height ceilings, echoes of its past existence as a two-story half basketball court ring with renewed splendor. The living room walls are decorated with color blocks of charcoal, ecru, moss, and smoky blue as a large-scale abstract canvas, while sculptural hooped lighting references the suite"s sporting heritage.

Cara Cara, the hotel"s distinctively laid-back rooftop bar & lounge restaurant, is a tranquil refuge carved out of the metropolitan sky. The individually scaled nooks of the downtown skyline-wrapped area, built inside a succession of various elevations, give singular experiences articulated in an alchemy of aesthetically spectacular and tactile rich vintage, custom, and artisanal designs.
